The High Rate of Congenital Heart Disease in Women of Fertile Age

FM-UGM. Most of the Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) patients in adults are women of fertile age. Even, some of them just diagnosed CHD during pregnancy and it causes problems at the time of childbirth. Patients with CHD, who already have Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), are at high risk while pregnancy and childbirth.

Recognizing the importance of prevention and treatment of high-risk pregnancies in these CHD-PH patients, the team of researchers of CDH-PH Faculty of Medicine UGM and Dr. Sardjito Hospital cooperate with CDH-PH patient group in Dr. Sardjito Hospital and PH Organization held a patient-family gathering, reproductive health education, pregnancy and high-risk childbirth to patients of CHD and HP on Sunday, May 14, 2017. The event is also to commemorate World Pulmonary Hypertension Day which is celebrated on May 5. About 100 participants enliven this activity, which consisting of patients, families, nurses, research teams, and doctors.

As the lead researcher, Dr. Lucia Kris Dinarti, Sp.PD, Sp.JP (K) gave a speech by explaining that this far registers CHD-PH patients who have been initiated since 2012 in Dr. Sardjito Hospital has recorded 500 more CHD-PH adult patients and doctors team with PH-Indonesia are working to facilitate access for getting medication of CHD-PH.
Furthermore, dr. Dyah Wulan Anggrahini, Sp.JP, PhD explained the mechanism of the occurrence of CHD and PH as well as diagnostic and treatment checks are done at Dr. Sardjito Hospital which determined as a service center and research of pulmonary hypertension in Indonesia. While, dr. Diannisa Ikarukmi, Sp.OG from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology UGM Faculty of Medicine explained clearly and very easily understood about the risks of pregnancy and childbirth for mother and fetus in patients with CHD-PH. In addition, dr.  Nanis also describes how to choose contraceptives to prevent proper pregnancy for women who are of the childbearing age with CDH.

Patients and families are also given the opportunity to ask questions and convey their opinion about the conditions that happened. Participants and families are very optimistic about their conditions and support each other. The term of patient replaced with the term of PH fighters, who are encouraging each other to fight for easy access to health services and medicines for CHD-PH.
